If I Were A Parent: The Reintroduction of the Pledge of Allegiance

When I was a kid, we began everyday in our classroom by honoring our country and pledging our allegiance to the American flag.  I remember saying these words:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America

And to the Republic for which is stands

One nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.

As a child I remember feeling united with my teacher and classmates after speaking these words about the country that we love and live in.  Many of us, would do well to travel the world, so that we can witness and appreciate the great United States of America that we call home.

If I were a parent, I would pressure my child’s school board to re-introduce the “Pledge of Allegiance” to our children.  If the school board was too afraid of litigation to enact my request, then I would assemble other like-minded parents and their children.  We would bring our own flag and stand outside on the curb of my child’s school every morning and began  a short prayer of protection for the children of this school and then we would end with the pledge of allegiance.  I am sure that we would see changes within our children, within our families, within our communities, within our state, and within our country.  These kinds of community actions, remind us that we are ONE.  We live in one nation and we will ALL answer to God for our apathy or for our activism.

Please leave a comment or tell us if you intend to return the pledge of allegiance to this generation and to future generations.

Conversation of Prayer

Did you know that prayer is a conversation? Have you ever prayed and then thought that your prayer did not matter or was not heard?

Perhaps, the reason we think our prayers are not heard or answered is because we do not take the time to listen after prayer. Prayer is really a simple spiritual exercise. The conversation of prayer requires that there is two-way communication.

I personally believe in a higher power, whom I call Jesus Christ. First, I thank Him for being God and for not leaving me here to navigate life on my own. Next, I tell Him what is on my mind. This may include specific needs, prayer for others, and quoting scriptures that support my prayer. Again, giving thanks is a great way to end a prayer. Lastly, after I have finished praying, then I sit still and listen.

How do you listen to God after prayer? Sometimes you will get an idea that is much like a message coming in through the conscience (soul:mind, will, emotions). For example, have you ever been on the verge of going somewhere or doing something? Based on a feeling or inclination that you had, you decided not to do or go to a particular place because you had a bad feeling or you just did not feel like going. After deciding not to go, you found out that something bad happened or that the event was cancelled. Listening in prayer is much like that experience. Some people also call it intuition. Prayer can guide, heal, inspire, instruct, protect, provide, etc. Whatever your specific need is, God through prayer, can and will provide.

Also, when you do not have much time, you can still pray. You can pray in your car on the way to work, on the way home from work, while walking, or before bed. Prayer can happen anywhere and God can hear you no matter where you are or what you are going through. Please be encouraged and whenever possible, join in the conversation of prayer.

Please leave a comment and tell me if you believe in prayer. Why or why not?

Prayer For Protection

As a young girl, I was faced with a difficult situation.  At age eleven my Mom was diagnosed with Lupus.  It  changed the atmosphere of our household as my active and overachieving Mom was no longer able to do all of the things that we had grown accustomed to.  As the youngest of four children, I was left in the house with both my parents.  My Dad was already disabled, but now my Mom could no longer work as a nurse.  I would wash her in the morning and give her the medications and the things that she needed before school.  Then I would come home from elementary school and do chores, prepare meals, and do my best to lighten the load to take my Mom’s place.  One day, I  was brushing my Mom’s hair.  My Mom had long beautiful black curly hair.  I used to think my Mom was a Native American Princess or something because her hair was so gorgeous.  Anyway, while brushing her hair the brush became filled with her hair and the hair was coming off at the very root.  I tried not to make a big deal of it but I could tell that my Mom was afraid that she might not  live much longer.

After she cried and began to sing praises to Jesus (in spite of her illness) she said, “Baby, I want you to always remember something.  If you are ever in trouble, if someone is trying to hurt you, or if you are afraid, just pray (quote) Psalms 91.  Psalms 91 is a prayer of protection and if you pray(quote) this scripture in times of trouble you will be protected by God’s angels.”

After she explained this phenomenon to me I was amazed.  I was fascinated by the idea that angels are always around to protect me.  My Mom and I started to study angels and how God strategically uses them in his army.  From that day until now, I have quoted and memorized Psalms 91 from the Bible.  I have been in major car accidents, people have tried to hurt me, circumstances have tried to overcome me, but  when I pray Psalms 91 none of these things have been able to hurt me.

Today we live in perilous times.  Bad things in life will happen, but God is still faithful to protect us if we seek His help.  Having problems, need help, need protection?  Memorize and quote Psalms 91 everyday and let me know if you are protected from someone or something.
