Young Men Can Succeed in School! Don’t Lose Your Right To Be Educated!

Dear Young Men,

Lately there has been a lot of talk about young men dropping out of school and not graduating from high school.  Some young men think that they can make fast money on the street hustling, trying to become a rapper, or doing a host of bad things.

Do you really want to spend you life looking over your shoulder?  Don’t you want to have a stable and safe life for your future families?  Of course you do! Did you know that if you are convicted of a felony that you cannot qualify for federal financial aid?  That’s pretty awful right?  The powers that be feel that if you make a mistake, you should not be allowed to ask for financial assistance to attend school.  You know why those laws are in place, because there is lots of money to be made by having inmates in prison.  I won’t go into the story here, but do your own research and find out about how prisons are multimillion dollar industries.

I know that you may have many obstacles in your life.  Maybe your parent works all the time and your never see your Mom and Dad, maybe you live with a foster parent or a relative, maybe you don’t have nice clothes and shoes for school, maybe other kids make fun of you for no reason.  I know school can be tough, I have been there, but PLEASE finish high school and go to college.  You can do it!!!!

These days you have options.  If you do not want to go to a school campus for some reason, you can receive your high school diploma by attending school online.  You may also attend a Junior College, which is a less expensive way to get your general education courses out of the way, and then you can transfer to a four-year college having spent less money.

For the young men who read “TVI:JWJ” please remember that I have faith in you and that I am praying for you. You are winners!!!

Girls, You Can Excel In Math & Science!

Dear Young Ladies,

I hope that you all are taking advantage of your time off of school to have fun, but to also think about your futures.

I was reminded the other day of my high school days when I was a member of “Upward Bound” and “MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement).” I remember how I struggled in 10th grade with Geometry because I had a teacher that was not a good instructor.  Although my Geometry teacher knew and understood how to do Geometry, she was awful at trying to explain it to me.  I was determined to succeed so I went to tutoring everyday.  I tried and tried, but still got a “D.”  I was determined to pass Geometry because I needed to pass it in order to reach my goal of attending U.C.L.A.  I took Geometry in summer school and passed with a B.  I was elated!  I did it!  I was always a natural at understanding scientific concepts, but it seemed like my ability to grasp advanced math depended on my connection with the teacher’s ability to explain.  With hard-work and dedication, I not only completed my college math requirement, but I was accepted into U.C.L.A. and graduated from U.C.L.A.

This week I want to encourage every girl that you can excel in Math and Science.  You may have to work hard, go to tutoring, or spend more time studying (if you are like me) or you will just grasp it.

I know our society sometimes makes you think that you do not need to be smart because you can marry rich, become a reality star, a video girl, or be a movie star…..but none of those options should be in the forefront of your mind.  Life can be a bitter pill at times and I want you to be prepared for it.  I am going to give you all some advice that my Mommy gave me when I was a girl, “Never rely on a man or anyone else to support you.  Get your education and obtain your degrees before you have a family of your own because you never know what might happen to your marriage or your husband.  If you are educated, at least you can take care of your family well if you are left alone to raise your children.”

Remember that I love you and I am praying for you.

Sweating Into A Healthier You

Last week I had the pleasure of playing volleyball and I had a blast!  I love organized sports, but I rarely have enough people who enjoy the sports that I enjoy playing.  After playing one of my favorite sports, I was drenched in sweat and my mind and body felt fabulous.  So, I thought to myself, how could I ever forget the benefits of sweating?  As soon as I got home from playing volleyball, I came home and jotted down this blog topic. Enjoy!

Do you know the benefits of sweating?

  •  It makes you look younger.
  •  It makes you feel better.
  • It clears your mind and improves your mind’s ability to function. It is also said to reduce or eliminate the effects of an aging brain.

So, with the weekend approaching, let’s find ways to sweat and have fun at the same time.  So grab your friends, children, parents, and grandparents and get moving!!!

Emotions: The Ever-Changing Liars

Dear Young Ladies and Young Men:

Have you ever been completely excited about attending a new school, a new job, a new sport activity, or going on a vacation?  When you got to the event that you were so excited about, have your feelings ever changed and you wonder how they could change so drastically. especially about something that you were once so ecstatic about?  I have too!

From elementary school through college I had to fight my emotions vehemently. I had to learn very early that my emotions could not be relied on to make ANY decisions, they are just there to give me a barometer of how I feel at that moment.  As a kid until I became a young adult, I helped to care for my parents who were battling life-threatening illnesses.  Every day I was nervous about the possibility of losing my parents, but I always prayed that I would never see my fear realized.

These days my feelings often encourage me to quit school and work because I am tired and it seems that I am making very small progress if any.  My feelings tell me that other people do NOT bother to work towards achieving a doctoral degree, so why should I?  My feelings tell me that I am doing too much and for what?  After listening to that nonsense for a minute, I remind myself that becoming a doctor was my long-term goal since I was a kid.  I also remind myself that I do not live my life based on what others do or think. I have my own DESTINY to FULFILL.

So, this weeks letter is simply a reminder that you too have a DESTINY to FULFILL, so please do NOT allow feelings of low self-esteem, sexual feelings, angry feelings, hateful feelings, lazy feelings, tired feelings, confused feelings, or any other feelings to thwart you dynamic futures.

Remember that I love you and I am always praying for you.
