Your Dog, Your Cat, & You!

Do you know what zoonotic diseases are? Zoonotic diseases are diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. As more animals have become domesticated and started to live in homes with people, the incidence or occurrence of disease has become more common place.

Dogs and cats can transmit bacterial infections, rickettsial, parasites, and certain fungal infections to humans, especially when animals and humans are living together (Tan, 1997).

Leave a comment and tell me what precautions you take to keep your pets and yourself healthy and free from disease.

What’s on your mind?

Dear Young Men,

I hope that life is treating you well. I usually write a letter to you all, but this week, I would like to know how you all are doing. Leave a comment and tell me how you are.

JOY!

With the recent loss of Ms. Whitney Houston on February 11, 2012, I know that many of our hearts our saddened. I know that it is tough to lose someone that is loved and beloved, but we must find the strength to mourn, while continuing to move forward.

This week, I want to encourage myself as well as you all to continue to move forward in love, peace, and most importantly, in joy. Work with an attitude of gratitude. Be kind to others for no reason and ignore the small annoyances that life may try to bring into your path. For instance, when you are on your way to work and someone cuts you off on the street or highway, please do not curse the person or chase them down the street, simply let it go and say, “Today I choose to have a great day and nothing will change my attitude.”

Happiness and joy have to be invited and expected in our lives in order for them to manifest in our lives. Have a terrific day!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day TVI:JWJ Readers! Did you show someone love today? If so, please take that spirit into everyday. Love makes the giver and the receiver of it very happy.

My Health Journey #9: Continuing the Course

Hey Everyone!

I am happy to report that I am continuing my health journey. I was forced to stop working-out last year as I had a few health issues that had me confined to bed. I am now feeling much better and I am excited about the future.

I am happy to report that I do walk and lift weights three (3) times a week. I am hoping to return to my trainer at some point, but right now my schedule does not allow it.

Oh yea, I have applied for a few programs/competitions. If chosen, I would be given a trainer, a dietitian, and all of the tools that I need to lose weight and improve my overall health. I am praying that I will hear from this program soon.

My goal is to lose 30 lbs by April 2012. I have lost 30 lbs before, so I know that I can reach the goal. I will be adding new video blogs to the blog series and eventually podcasting so that you all can join me in this journey to hear and see my struggle via video blogging or vlogging.

Does anyone care to join me on my weight-loss journey? If so, leave a comment and we can keep one another accountable.

iStudy-Winter 2012

Wow! I have not blogged about my doctoral program in a very long time. I am very happy to report that I am only four classes away from dissertation. I am so excited because I have braved job loss, death of loved ones, personal sickness, and a host of other issues in pursuit of my educational dream.

I just want to encourage everyone who is pursuing a dream to please NEVER GIVE UP!!!!

No One Owes U!

Dear Young Ladies & Gentleman:

I hope that you all are having a great new school semester. If you are no longer in school, I hope that you are personally developing yourselves by reading books, doing research, speaking or interviewing with mentors in your field, and attending community and other conferences in your fields of interest.

I was washing the dishes the other day and I heard my Dad’s voice say, “Always take your time and do your work in a great way. If you do a great job you will always have employment or perhaps you will own your own business as long as you do NOT act like someone owes you something.”

These days I see many young people who do not believe that they need to work hard. Some young people have such a bad attitude that they have made themselves unemployable. Other young people feel that it is acceptable to show up late to class and be disrespectful to classmates and teachers. As a former High School Substitute Teacher, I often cringe when I see this kind of behavior, because I wonder whether or not these young people will be successful in this world with their bad habits. Always, remember that bad habits can be broken and that you can create new more positive habits. I know that life is complicated, but you as young people need to understand that you have to work for everything that this life affords you. We all face obstacles in life, but the people who work the hardest, usually achieve the most. Working hard really does pay off!!

Remember that I love you and that I am always praying for your success.

Leave a comment and tell me how you feel about hard work and showing up on time for class or work. What are you doing right now to reach your goals?
